
The call I get most often in July doesn’t sound like an air quality call. It sounds like this: “The thermostat says 74, but the house feels like a swamp, and my daughter’s allergies are worse inside than outside.”
That homeowner thinks they have an AC problem. What they actually have is an indoor air quality problem, and here the two are welded together in a way they aren’t in Denver or Phoenix. 2. Most of our ductwork lives in the worst place in the house
Slab-on-grade construction plus vented attics means supply and return ducts run through space that hits 130°F-plus in August.
ENERGY STAR reports that in a typical house, about 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through the duct system is lost to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts (source). That reads as an energy statistic. In practice it’s an air quality statistic.
Leaks on the return side don’t lose air, they gain it. A gapped plenum or unsealed boot pulls hot, humid, dusty attic air straight into your air handler and blows it into your bedrooms. I’ve opened return plenums in Conroe homes and found the cabinet interior coated in attic debris. No purifier fixes that. Sealing does, which is why our ductwork services are step one on an IAQ job rather than an upsell at the end.
3. Our pollen and mold calendar barely takes a break
The Houston Health Department runs an AAAAI-certified station using a Burkard Spore Trap that samples pollen and mold spores at 10 liters per minute, 24 hours a day, publishing counts every weekday at the Houston Pollen and Mold Reports page. It’s the closest free primary-source dataset we have.
The archives show what locals already feel: cedar and oak in late winter and spring, grasses through summer, ragweed in fall, and mold spores that spike after every rain. There’s no clean two-month allergy season here.

Static pressure is the one homeowners have never heard of and the one that explains the most. It’s blood pressure for your duct system. Most residential equipment is rated to move design airflow at roughly 0.5 in. w.c. I regularly find readings well above that here.

That last row is the one I care about. Get the moisture out and people raise the thermostat voluntarily while the house feels better. Musty smell gone in 2 weeks.
What I Got Wrong at First
Mistake 1: I recommended MERV 13 to everybody.
Higher number, better air, right? Not in a 1-inch slot. High-MERV media in a system designed around low restriction drives static up, drops airflow, ices coils and shortens blower life. I was solving a particle problem and creating an airflow problem. Now I check filter pressure drop against available static first. Usually the answer is a deeper cabinet at a moderate MERV.
Mistake 2: I sold air purification before I sealed ducts.
I once installed a UV system in a home with a persistently musty return. It helped some. It helped far more after we found the return pulling attic air through a gap I hadn’t inspected. Mistake 3: I underestimated tight new construction.
Older Montgomery homes leak enough that they accidentally ventilate. Newer builds are sealed far tighter, and without a designed fresh-air path, pollutants accumulate. - Add active air cleaning last. Coil UV or a whole-home air scrubber: real tools with real limits, and a finishing layer rather than a foundation.
