How to Change Your AC Filter in Texas (And How Often)

I have pulled a lot of filters out of a lot of ceilings around Montgomery. Some still had the plastic wrap on. One had sat so long the cardboard frame collapsed and folded into the blower housing, and the homeowner was sure her compressor was dying.

A filter change is the cheapest thing you can do for your AC, and the job I see done wrong most often. Here is how I do it, how often I tell customers to do it, and the mistakes that turn a five dollar part into a service call.

One shedding dog, cut the peak season numbers by a third. Two pets, or one pet plus carpet, and you are on a 30 day cycle from March through November no matter what the packaging claims.

The reason is not that Texas dust is special. It is runtime. Normal highs at the Houston area stations sit at or above 90 degrees from June into mid September (NWS Houston/Galveston climate normals), and we run cooling well outside that window. Add the pollen and mold seasons the Houston Health Department counts every weekday. A filter does not age by the calendar. It ages by how much air passes through it.

What Every Other Filter Guide Gets Wrong

I read the pages ranking for this topic before writing. They all cover filter types, MERV basics, and the 30/60/90 rule. Three things are missing from all of them.

The DOE statistic that is no longer on the DOE page

Almost every HVAC blog repeats that a clean filter cuts energy use by 5 to 15 percent, credited to the Department of Energy. I repeated it too. Go read the current DOE Energy Saver page. That percentage is gone. What DOE says now is that “dirty, clogged filters reduce airflow and system efficiency,” and it advises replacing filters every month or two during the cooling season.

The second half matters more than the missing number. Federal advice is one to two months during a cooling season. Ours starts in March.

A filter interval is a pressure limit, not a date

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory monitored ten homes for a year and measured what people actually had installed. Those filters ran from MERV 4 to MERV 13, with pressure drops of 16 to 173 pascals, averaging 71 (Walker et al., ASHRAE Transactions 2013). More than a ten to one spread across ordinary houses. Their maintenance finding was blunt: “changing filters more often in high fouling situations is essential.”

No single calendar number covers a spread that wide, so I measure instead of guessing.

The airflow cliff nobody mentions

Cooling systems want roughly 350 to 400 CFM of airflow per ton. The same LBNL paper cites research showing performance drops off fast below about 200 CFM per ton, and a loaded filter is an easy way to walk a system toward that edge. When someone tells me the AC runs but the house never gets cool, the filter is the first thing I check.

How to Change AC Filter Montgomery Texas: My Exact Process

1. Shut the system off, not up

Thermostat to Off, fan to Off. Turning the temperature up is not the same thing. If the blower kicks on with the slot open, everything in the return duct lands on your evaporator coil.

2. Find every filter, not the first one

Plenty of Montgomery County homes have two filter locations and most owners know about one. Check the return grilles, then the air handler itself. Two story homes in Woodforest and Bentwater often run a second attic system with its own filter. Photograph each one in place before you touch it.

3. Pull it straight out and read the dirty side

The loaded side faces the return air. On a ceiling grille that side faces up, which is why a filter looks fine from the floor while the top is a gray mat. Hold it to a light bulb. If almost nothing comes through, it was overdue.

4. Check the slot before the new filter goes in

Flashlight into the empty slot. Dust past where the filter sat means air is bypassing it. Look for daylight around the frame edges and a torn door gasket. I close small gaps with foam weatherstrip.

5. Seat it, date it, listen to it

Arrow toward the blower, which at a ceiling return means up into the ceiling. Latch it closed and run the system for a minute. A whistle means too much restriction or a leaking slot. A rattle means it is not seated. Then write the date on the cardboard edge with a marker.

Nominal size versus actual size

A filter labeled 16x25x1 actually measures about 15.5 by 24.5 inches, because manufacturers print the nominal size. If someone cut your opening to a true 16 by 25, you have half an inch of gap on two sides and a real share of your return air never touches the media.

What I Measured in Montgomery County Homes

Between June 1 and September 15 last season I logged filter pressure drop on every visit with a clean access point. Here is what 1-inch pleated MERV 8 filters looked like.

That last row matters because most residential equipment is rated for about 0.5 inches of water column of total external static pressure for the whole system. At 90 days these filters alone ate nearly that entire budget, before the ducts and coil took a share.

Nothing else was touched on that visit. No refrigerant, no cleaning, no parts. One filter. Across 118 no-cool calls that window, 31 traced back to a filter or a filter related coil problem. Roughly one in four summer emergencies, from a part that costs less than lunch.

Picking a MERV Rating Without Choking Your System

EPA guidance is to pick a filter rated at least MERV 13, “or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate” (EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home). That last clause gets skipped constantly, and it is doing most of the work.
Higher MERV catches more fine particles and adds resistance. In the LBNL field study, swapping low MERV filters for MERV 16 on PSC blower motors dropped airflow by an average of 188 CFM, about 22 percent, and several homeowners asked for them to be pulled back out over the whistling. Most Montgomery County homes built before 2010 have a 1-inch slot and a PSC blower, which leaves little room. What I do:

  • 1-inch slot, standard home: MERV 8 to 11. The safe zone.
  • 1-inch slot with allergies in the house: measure static pressure first. Headroom means MERV 11. No headroom means a bigger filter cabinet, not a denser panel.
    • 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet: MERV 13 is realistic, because the media area is several times larger and pressure drop stays sane.

What I Got Wrong at First

I trusted the 90 day rule. I repeated whatever the box said. Then I pulled a filter at day 70 in a Willis home with two labs and found the coil already frosting. She had followed the printed instruction exactly. I had handed her a national number for a house with two shedding dogs.

I recommended MERV upgrades before measuring. I pushed MERV 13 panels at anyone with allergies. One home called back two weeks later with a frozen coil. That blower was already at its limit and I shoved it over. Now the manometer comes out first.

I ignored bypass. For years I treated a filter change as a straight swap and never looked at the gaps. Once I started shining a light into the slots, I found dust tracks past the filter in about a third of homes. A filter air can travel around is one you are not using.

And the mistakes I keep finding in other people’s homes

  • The plastic wrap is still on, so the return is effectively blocked.
  • Two filters stacked in one slot. That does not double filtration, it roughly doubles resistance.
  • Drywall dust ignored. A remodel or a new build next door loads a filter in two to three weeks.
  • A washable filter put back damp. A wet electrostatic filter in a humid return duct is a mold invitation.

Edge Cases Most Filter Guides Skip

Damp filters and musty smells

A damp or musty filter is not a filter problem. It is moisture in the return or a drainage issue at the air handler, and air freshener will not touch it. Homes around Lake Conroe see this more than the rest of the county.

Zoning changes the math

On a zoned system, airflow shifts with whichever zone is calling. When only the upstairs zone runs, the blower pushes through a smaller duct path and filter pressure climbs. LBNL measured that pattern in a zoned test home. Set your interval by your smallest zone.

When a Filter Change Is Not the Fix

A fresh filter solves a lot of complaints, but not all of them. Call a licensed technician if:

  • It still short cycles or runs nonstop with a clean filter
  • You hear a new noise when it starts up
  • You find water dripping from a ceiling or pooling near the air handler
  • The unit trips the breaker
  • Ice forms on the refrigerant line with a new filter in place
