The 7 Real Causes of an AC Tripping Breaker
1. Failing run capacitor
My number one find. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan their starting push. When it weakens the motor drags, amps climb, and the breaker lets go seconds into the start. Ten percent under rated microfarads does it in July. Watch for a loud hum or click when the unit tries to start, then silence.
2. Packed condenser coil
Dirt is insulation. When the outdoor coil cannot dump heat, head pressure climbs and amps follow. I pull cottonwood, clippings, dryer lint, and dog hair out of coils. Homes near open fields in Magnolia and Dobbin foul faster than shaded lots in The Woodlands.
3. Condenser fan motor going bad
Worn bearings make a motor pull more current, and a shorted winding trips the breaker outright. I check bearing play by hand with the disconnect pulled, then compare running amps to the label.
4. Burned contactor
The relay feeding the outdoor unit. Contacts pit and weld, creating heat and voltage drop that push amps up. Fire ants are a real cause of contactor failure here. They nest in the control compartment and bridge the contacts.
5. Compressor that is grounded or hard starting
The expensive one. As a compressor ages, winding insulation breaks down and current leaks to the shell. An insulation resistance reading to ground tells you fast. One that trips instantly with the fan disconnected is usually finished.
6. Loose wiring, or the breaker itself
Texas heat cycles copper daily. Lugs back off, whip insulation cracks, and disconnects corrode in Lake Conroe humidity. Loose means resistance, resistance means heat, heat means a trip. Breakers wear out too. Every trip heats the internal element, and one that has tripped twenty times starts letting go under normal load. That part is an electrician’s work, not mine, and I say so.
7. Indoor airflow restriction

What I Got Wrong at First
I did not learn any of this from a manual. I learned it from callbacks.
- I replaced capacitors without testing the compressor windings. A weak reading used to be enough for me. Swap it, system runs, and I am back in nine days. A dragging compressor makes a healthy capacitor test poorly. Now I take an insulation resistance reading to ground before quoting one. Four extra minutes, and it saves customers from paying twice.
- I washed condenser coils from the outside. That felt right and it is wrong. Debris enters from outside, so spraying inward packs it deeper into the fins. I now pull the top and fan and wash from the inside out.
